What
is a credit union? A credit union is a cooperative financial service organization
that is owned by the people it serves -- its members (customers). A credit union
provides all the same products and services that traditional banks and savings
and loans do, while usually keeping its members happier.
How is a credit union
different from a bank? There are many differences between banks and credit
unions, the most important of which is that a credit union is democratically run
by its members. A credit union's primary commitment is to serve its member's financial
needs, whereas banks and trust companies exist to earn dividends for shareholders. Will
my money be safe with ValleyStone Credit Union®? Absolutely. The National
Credit Union Administration, a government agency, insures all ValleyStone
Credit Union® deposits to $100,000. Excess deposits are insured through Massachusetts
Share Insurance Corporation. Top
Why do I have to pay a
membership fee to join ValleyStone Credit Union®? A ValleyStone Credit
Union® member is also a shareholder who holds ownership shares in the credit union.
A one-time $25 investment is held on deposit in each member's name and remains
in this account throughout the duration of membership. Members are encouraged
to attend the annual meeting and vote for members of the board of directors.
How does ValleyStone Credit Union® operate?
Policies and procedures are set and monitored by a volunteer board of elected
directors and the day-to-day operations are the responsibility of the President/CEO.
The democratic structure of ValleyStone Credit Union® makes it unique.
Why are savings accounts called "shares",
checking accounts called "share drafts" and CDs called "share certificates?
Each ValleyStone Credit Union® member is a part owner. Each actually owns "shares"
in the credit union, rather than having deposits in the credit union, which signifies
ownership. The funds a member puts into his/her credit union account are actually
shares of the ValleyStone Credit Union®. Share savings accounts are identical
to a savings account at a bank or savings and loan. In addition, a ValleyStone
Credit Union® "share draft" account is the same product as a "checking
account" at a bank, and a share certificate account at ValleyStone Credit
Union® is the same as a certificate of deposit at a bank or savings and loan.
